International Trade Policies Of Campaign 2000 Essays - Economy

International Trade Policies Of Campaign 2000 I. Introduction Although international trade policy has not been one of the major points of debate in this year's presidential race, determining the role which the United States will play in the rapidly expanding global market will be a fundamental issue for the next administration. The next president will be forced to deal with a number of important, and in many cases delicate problems, that may change the direction of international trade for the next century. Among these, is the acceptance of China into the World Trade Organization (WTO). The United States has taken a leading role in pushing for the admittance of China into the WTO, but there have been technical problems, preventing the deal from being closed. Of concern also, will be the demands of developing nations, who wish to reach a more equitable trading relationship with the industrialized countries. (Economist) It will be the responsibility of the next president to find working solutions to these dilemmas. The two major party candidates this election cycle are Republican Governor George W. Bush of Texas and Democratic Vice President Al Gore. The two share similar positions within some aspects of foreign trade policy, but differ significantly on others. II. International Trade Policy of Vice President Al Gore Vice President Gore is an advocate of free trade. His support for the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which created an open market system between Canada, Mexico and the United States, was the key reason it was passed into law on January 1, 1994 (North American Free Trade Agreement). He believes that open markets spur technological innovation on a worldwide scale, and create tremendous growth and job opportunities domestically (Voter). In a speech delivered to the Washington Council on International Trade, Vice President Gore remarked that foreign barriers to trade hurt the people they were intended to protect, at the cost of American jobs. An example of this is the European Union's import ban on hormone-treated beef produced in the United States, which sent the livestock industry reeling for several months (Economist). Gore insists that his administration will focus on opening the European and Japanese markets to genetically-modified farm products, in addition to fighting against other foreign trade barriers. The Vice President does support labor and environmental standards for our trading partners, however. His said the following in a speech delivered to the World Economic Forum: ?As we open the doors for global trade wider than ever before, we want to build a trading system that includes strong safeguards for workers, for health and safety and for a clean environment.? Gore went on to say that trade with developing nations should be linked to established labor and environmental standards and that, if safeguards are not in place and met, the market should not remain open. Vice President Gore plans to use the WTO as his platform for addressing international trade policies and standards. He is in favor of modernizing the organization and making it more open and accessible to developing nations. At the next round of WTO meetings, Gore proposes detailed discussions regarding labor and environmental safeguards and ways to deal with nations, potentially involving sanctions, which fail to meet the standards (Voter). Gore was in favor of granting China permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) and has been a key player in pushing for their accession to the WTO. He believes that accepting China as a strategic trading partner enables the United States to politically and economically reform China, while reaping the rewards trading with China has to offer (Groombridge, Voter). III. International Trade Policy of Gov. George W. Bush Gov. Bush supports unilateral free trade. He believes that the entirety of the Western Hemisphere, from Alaska to Cape Horn, should exist with no trade barriers, in essence, incorporating Central and South American nations under NAFTA. Such an arrangement, Gov. Bush believes, will add to the approximately 12 million export related jobs that currently exist in the United States (Bush). The governor adheres to the belief that there should be no link between trade policies and labor and environmental standards. He advocates the United States' involvement in working with our trading partners to improve their policies rather than imposing sanctions against them. He does however, support the International Labor

The Origin of DNA and Molecular Structure Essays

The Origin of DNA and Molecular Structure Essays The Origin of DNA and Molecular Structure Essay The Origin of DNA and Molecular Structure Essay 1950 James Watson Francis Crick took up the quest of determining the three- dimensional structure of DNA, they believed that the DNA structure would be great importance. Watson and Crick accomplishment was in some measure built on the work of their contemporary DNA researchers. 1951 Rosalind Franklin x-ray crystallography of the DNA molecule without her know- ledge, for instance, was a vital step toward discovery. She began to capture pictures of DNA using x-ray diffraction. She also pre- sented her findings in a talk and suggested hat the phosphate groups were on the outside of the molecule. 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick deliv- ered the structure of a double helix DNA molecule. They succeeded in connec- ting pieces, old and new, from friends to foe. 1926 Erwin Schrodinger had introduced an Equation that describe the behavior of matter. He proclaimed that living and non-living matter all obey the same laws as physics and chemistry, and proposed that living organisms should be treated in terms of molecular and atomic structure. 865 Gregor Mendel discovered the basic laws of heredity, and first used the word gene. He deuced that genes come in pairs and are inherited as distinct units, one from each parent. He also tracked the segregation of parental genes and their appearance in the offspring of dominant or reces- Sive trait. 1869 Friedrich Miescher found substance in pus-soaked bandages, rich in white blo- od cells. He learned that the only source for nuclein was chromosomes, which he realized was a significant discovery. He supported the chemical heredity theory, hich contends that our basic biological information is passed from generation to generation and is stored in chemical sub- stances in our cells. 1902 Archibald Garrod hypothesized that it was a gene mutation caused the inherited disor- der alkaptonuria, that the disease was un- born. He went on to study other diseases that were not genetic, not bacterial. The research continued to build up upon the idea that hereditary genetic material within the cell was important. 928 Frederick Griffith studied two different trains of pneumococci, the S-form and R-form. The S-form killed infected mice, while the R-form had no effect. He found living S bacteria in their dead bodies. He concluded that something had been trans- ferred between the two types of bacteria. Thomas Hunt Morgan wrote the Theory ofa Gene. He localized genes to specific locations on chromosomes. He also concl- uded that the genes were the hereditary unit Mendel had described as Chromo some Theory of Heredity. His specific mapping of Genes onto chromosomes made biology ccessible for experiments. 1949 Erwin Chargaff studied the makeup of the DNA molecule, he discovered that the Structure was composed of a sugar, a phos- phate group, and four nitrogenous bases (ATCG). He isolated DNA from different organisms and measured the levels of each of the four nitrogenous bases. 1944 Oswald Avery showed that Fred Griffiths transforming principle had been contamin- ated by proteins. He and his colleagues showed that proteases, enzymes that degrade proteins, had no effect on the heat-treated S pneumonia.

Patient Safety and the USA Healthcare System Essay

Patient Safety and the USA Healthcare System - Essay Example USA healthcare system has not been efficient in handling the safety of patients. This is because it has encountered various challenges identified by experts. One of the challenges is wrong-site surgery. This occurs when an operation is done on the wrong part of the body. Even though it is rare and preventable it still occurs in the current hospitals. It is apparent that from the year 1995 to 2010 about 956 wrong-site incidents were reported to the Joint Commission. A medication error is another challenge evident in the America health care system. It is apparent when the patients receive the wrong medication or when the wrong dosage is given to a patient. A report by the Institute of Medication in 2006 showed that estimates of 1.5 million Americans each year are harmed by medical errors. This has resulted in an extra medical cost of $3.5 billion (Pauley & Joseph, 2012).Health care-acquired infection is another challenge that the America health care is facing though at a minimal level. The challenge occurs when a person gets an infection while being treated. It is apparent that 1 out of 20 patients hospitalized in United States contract health care acquire infections. At the end, the patient spends more time in the hospital and takes longer recovery time. Falls are other causes of injuries in the health care settings and the outside environment. Research has shown that about 500,000 falls happen each year in Americans hospitals resulting to 150,000 injuries (Savage & Ford, 2008).

Compare the Federalist and Democratic philosophies of government Essay

Compare the Federalist and Democratic philosophies of government - Essay Example With the start of the new government under the Constitution, President George Washington made his former aide de camp, Alexander Hamilton, United States Secretary of the Treasury. Hamilton was immediately tasked with coming up with a plan to restore public credit. Hamilton proposed the fairly ambitious Hamiltonian economic program and organized alliances to get these measures passed through the Congress. The measures he proposed were far from universally popular. In particular, they were well liked by the commercial North, and were heartily disliked by the agrarian South. This spurred James Madison, Hamilton's ally in the fight to establish the United States Constitution, to join with Thomas Jefferson in opposing Hamilton's program. The Democratic Party evolved from the political factions that opposed Alexander Hamilton's fiscal policies in the early 1790s; these factions are known variously as the Anti-Administration "Party" or the Anti-Federalists. In the mid-1790s, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison organized these factions into a party and helped define its ideology in favor of yeomen farmers, strict construction of the Constitution, and a weaker federal government. ... The new party was especially effective in building a network of newspapers in major cities to broadcast its statements and editorialize in its favor. By 1790 or 1791, coalitions were forming in Congress for and against the Hamiltonian program. These were nameless, shifting ad-hoc factions, not permanent political parties. By 1792 or 1793 newspapers started calling Hamilton supporters "Federalists" and the opponents "Republicans". In 1791, Jefferson and Madison travelled widely looking for alliances with factions and parties at the state level. They had support from the short-lived Democratic-Republican Societies. Their major success came in New York, where long-term governor George Clinton, and ambitious newcomer Aaron Burr, signed up, as Hamilton was the son-in-law of General Schuyler, one of Clinton's enemies. Hamilton likewise realized the need for support in the states; he formed connections with local factions, and used his network of Treasury agents to link together friends of the government, especially businessmen and financiers in the new nation's dozen small cities (Schlisinger 1992). The state networks of both parties began to operate in 1794 or 1795, thus firmly establishing what has been called The First Party System in all the states. Patronage now became a factor. The winner-take-all election system opened a wide gap between winners, who got all the patronage, and losers who got none. Hamilton had over 2000 Treasury jobs to dispense, while Jefferson had one part-time job in the State Department, which he gave to journalist Philip Freneau; Madison had none. In New York, however, Clinton used dubious methods to win the election for governor and used the vast

Thinking about cover, then and now Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Thinking about cover, then and now - Assignment Example Conflicts between Coulton and Glee based on baaed on the arrangement of ‘Baby Got Back’. Both Glee and Coulton were not original song writer but it was a cover of a cover as Glee covering Jonathan Coulton covering Sir Mixalot. Sir Mixalot’s arrangement are different from Coulton covering and uniquely Colton’s. When Glee covered the song, it became obvious to Coulton and supported the origin of the arrangement as it was quite similar as Glee covering incorporated Colton’s line Johnny C’s in trouble’ while in Mixalot’s original song had, ‘Mix-A-Lot‘s in trouble and line was dropped by FOX in Glee performance. As the cover song was aired and sold in iTunes, it dealt Coulton a blow finically as Glee was given unethical and uncredited exposure by FOX as TV shows had stolen from Coulton. It is quite evident that legally Glee was right but ethically wrong by ripping from where he had not sowed. Even though, the work was not Coulton, he had to be credited when Glee took his arrangement based on ‘Baby Got Back† as he interpreted and created the song. Glee ought to have paid royalties as he earned from covering which would not be possible without the work of other artist. Another unethical covering is taking place in YouTube with over 40000 people having covered ‘Rolling in the Deep’, 6000 covering, ‘Somebody That I Used to Know and 11000 covering, ‘Pumped Up Kicks’ driven by non-commercial benefits being done out of love by fans of original songs hence no negative on market value of original but is a creativity criminalized as it done without synchronization license. Other examples of cover are those bought from Tom Waist’s Orphan Collection including such covers exposing his lounge as a singer from a different planet. ‘Sea of Love’ from Robert Plant’s Honey-drippers being covered by over billion people with Waist’s weird take but interesting. Alabama 3 album has also covered ‘Hotel

Influencer Marketing On Twitter Marketing Essay

Influencer Marketing On Twitter Marketing Essay Sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have knowledgeable unprecedented growth over the last few years and are some of the most talked about destinations on the web. Social media offers an opportunity to connect and interact with your customers, analysis about your product, promote your brand and drive traffic to your website. Social media marketing programs usually center on efforts to create content that attracts attention and encourages readers to share it with their social networks. This form of marketing is driven by word-of-mouth, meaning it results in earned media rather than paid media. Social media has become a platform that is easily accessible to anyone with internet access. Increased communication for organizations fosters brand awareness and often, improved customer service. Additionally, social media serves as a relatively inexpensive platform for organizations to implement marketing campaigns. Social media itself is a catch-all term for sites that may provide radically different social actions. Keywords: Social Media, Social Media Marketing, Web Analytics, Online Business, Web Branding, Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Linkedin, Youtube What are the major social media sites? Many online services now have a social element, the five most important social media sites for businesses are: Facebook. Social network available in 70 languages with over 800 million members worldwide, and more than 425 million monthly active users logging in with mobile smart phones. Twitter. Micro blogging site where users post frequent 60 character messages with over 1 billion tweets sent a week. Google+. Social network launched in 2011, attracting 25 million members in its first month! Linkedin. Business focused networking site with over 8 million members in the UK, and 2 million companies profiles worldwide. Youtube. Video sharing site owned by Google, with 8 million unique visitors each month and 100 million people taking a social action (likes, shares, comments etc) every week. SOCIAL MARKETER FACEBOOK There are more than 800 million people using Facebook every day. This platform offers more than just a way to stay connected to friends and family; it is an essential tool in the B2B marketing toolbox. Facebook allows your business to be available to people on a trusted, popular platform, where prospects can see real people (their friends, family or colleagues) interacting with you and your brand. This sets the stage for you to build stronger, more immediate relationships with them. Facebook Pages can help your company build awareness, share interest, create loyalty, strengthen marketing, and promote peer-to-peer sharing. For that first split the elements of a Facebook page-and how you can take advantage of them: How to See and Be Seen An interaction can be defined as a summary of Likes, posts, or comments about the page. To show up in as many users top newsfeeds as possible, your content must be brand new, attractive, current and convincing. Then it becomes a cycle; you post content that gets Likes and comments, and your future content appears in the newsfeeds of those that Liked and commented on earlier content. Dont forget: as prospects interact with you through Likes, reposts, or shares, you should be tracking engagement. Facebook Groups The Group feature is useful for demonstrating your companys passion for a topic, and gathers like-minded people to share ideas. The best part is that the more people join your group, the more it gets promoted to their friends and networks, growing the groups popularity and growth. Creating a Facebook Group is a great way for businesses to create awareness, increase inbound links and promote loyalty. Facebook Lists Facebook launched this feature in response to Google+s circles, so it functions in a very similar way. You can subscribe to and organize lists for different topics or influencers you want to follow. As an example, you might have a list for Social Media Influencers and another list for competitors. Through lists you can easily view and post to select groups or a company, which makes it easier for you to monitor and engage. Facebook Promoted Posts Promoted posts show up in the newsfeed of all your fans and are visible to their friends as well. It becomes a sponsored story that is seen by more people than a regular post, so be sure that when you do choose to promote a post, it is strong, recent and gripping. It is pretty safe to say that businesses will never be able to compete with posts that are strictly entertainment-based or for social purposes only. But by using this promoted post feature, you can call attention to posts that you believe will generate the most impact. Facebook Ads While your Facebook ads need to appeal to your audience, think exterior the box. Use eye catching pictures and gripping language. Remember: youre competing for attention in a noisy environment. Facebook Apps Before the timeline changes took place, you could capture Likes via your welcome page by gating your content and encouraging users to Like your page for access to this exclusive content. This has gone away with timeline. Now Facebook gives you the option to feature up to twelve apps. Four of these apps are shown by default, with the remaining apps under the fold and only visible by clicking and expanding the tab on the right. Allowing you to change the apps appearing above the fold is one of the most interactive and engaging portions of the timeline and your best chance to showcase a call to action or offer that will convert. Consider the image a small advertisement rather than an image. SOCIAL MARKETER TWITTER In 2007, Twitter began as what many considered to be a flash-in-the-pan social media outlet, but as of 2011, Twitter had over 200million registered users and is one of the 10 most popular sites on the Internet anything but a passing phase. Companies that lack a strategic, lead-generating plan of attack for their Twitter accounts are losing out on access to a huge potential customer base and the opportunity to showcase themselves as social confidence, relevant businesses. Being followed on Twitter is an incredibly strong signal of online attraction for your business. Think of Twitter as the water cooler for B2B marketers: its energetic community where businesses can prospect leads and assemble as thought leaders to discuss relevant industry topics. B2B marketers are always striving to provide good content in an easily digestible and timely format. On Twitter, it is easy to quickly compose Tweets and messages aimed at those interested in your company or product. Twitter Following Becoming someones follower on Twitter accomplishes four goals: You identify Twitter accounts that will be relevant and interesting to you, your organization and your industry. You let people know that youre on Twitter, and encourage them to follow you back. Twitter is a great platform for engagement, so once you follow someone on Twitter you can work on starting a conversation. Guidelines for Following Find people to follow by importing your contact databases using tools that Twitter provides. Be sure to also follow people that your competitors are following. Do a search for experts in the field who are tweeting. If possible, try to make sure to follow back relevant people and companies that are following you. You dont want to upset scenario, customers or partners by not following them! Twitter provides easy search functionality so that you can find people that are talking about your company and your industry. Read the tweets of those you follow and search for tweets on keywords relevant to your product or service. Create lists. By creating a list you can easily segment people who you are following. Strategy to Make Your Tweets Engaging and Easy for a Follower to Retweet: Always use a URL shortened. You only have 140 characters, so make it count! Keep tweets below 140 characters, ideally under 100 characters. It makes retweeting easier to do. The symbol # on Twitter is known as a hash tag. These tags are used to affiliate a tweet with a certain topic and can be useful for tracking social marketing campaigns and connecting with customers. Avoid the temptation to use tools that send automatic direct messages. You can also engage Twitter followers and influencers by including @ mention in your tweets. You can do this when you post content you think will resonate with an influencer. Use Twitter lists to segment users by interest or group together brand advocates and your favorite twitter users. Keep in mind that when you add a user to a public list they are notified and the list is open and searchable to all users. Use Twitter during events and to promote things like contests. A great way to engage your Twitter followers is to create a contest that asks followers to contribute in some way you want your Twitter feed to be a mix of Tweets youve created, as well as replies and retweets. Promoted Tweets in Search Always see significant spikes in relevant Tweets during industry events. You decided to take advantage of that and use Promoted Tweets in search results during key B2B conference dates. This allowed us to be part of relevant conversations when the conversations are hot. Influencer Marketing on Twitter Twitter is a fantastic platform to learn who your influencers are. Because Twitter is designed for quick exchanges of information and shares, you can start to keep track of who is re-tweeting your content and engaging in conversations. Remember to reach out to your top sharers to create relationships. The more you engage directly with your top influencers, the more they will continue to promote your content. Promoted Tweets in Timelines A Twitter strategy we have used with great success is launching Promoted Tweets in timelines targeted to followers and users who are similar to our followers. Our Promoted Tweets contain timely and engaging content like contests for trips to industry events and links to thought-leadership pieces. We set up a series of three tweets per campaign and rotate them accordingly. For timelines, we run three tweets on one campaign for three days at a time Messaging To some, this may sound backwards or surprising, but do not use Twitter to only promote your company. Sure, calling out your companys new eBook or webcast is an important part of your tweeting. But if you never contribute to the conversations taking place, if you never offer something personal or fun or funny, you are missing the prime opportunity unique to Twitter. Twitter is about building relationships. Engage and be engaged. Remember, your content should create value and ultimately, be helpful to your network. In B2B marketing, retweeting material that will be helpful to your network is good, but writing your own informational material is even better. SOCIAL MARKETER Google+ Google+ is quickly becoming an essential part of any businesses social media strategy. Google+ had over 90 million users, this social network is going to grow very quickly as Google is making a Google+ account mandatory for all Gmail users. Google + is also playing a major role in SEO by making it easier for marketers to show up in search results. About Page An essential but often overlooked important first step, the about page is a fantastic opportunity to give a quick overview of what your business is all about. You can also link back to specific pages and services from this page directing potential customers to the most important pages on your website. Its important to have a balance of marketing savvy copy thats also SEO friendly. Make sure to include information that searchers will want to know about your company. Take advantage of the fact that Google+ allows you to use bullets in your description which makes it simple to create an easy-to-read list of your products and services. Google+ Events Google recently announced the Events feature which allows Google+ users to send out customized invitations to anyone regardless of whether or not they are Google+ users. It syncs beautifully with Google Calendar and shows up automatically when a user confirms for an event. The Party mode feature of Events allows everyone in attendance to instantly upload pictures to the same album using the Google+ mobile app, creating a living, real-time photo journal of a specific time and place. You can then show the photos off in sequential order as a slideshow all within Google+. Google+ Circles This functionality allows a marketer to segment their followers. Unlike other social networks, through Circles, marketers can develop audienc and communicate highly segmented messaging to each audience. This allows you to have a more authentic dialogue with your key prospects. Google+ Hangouts Use Google+ Hangouts for video conferencing. Again, the beauty here is that it is highly integrated with other Google applications. So, if you use Google apps for your business, Hangouts can be a quick and easy way to connect teams and get some face time with a prospect. The Business Benefits for Setting Up Google+ Authorship: Increases awareness of your overall Google+ profile page. Studies have shown that Google Authorship increases click through rates. Helps your content stand out from the crowded search page results. Adds a human element to your content and increases trustworthiness. Improves your chances of showing up in more personalized search results. Protects the original posts ranking position as higher than a post that has scraped or syndicated the original content.

Hawthorne Critiques Puritan Society in His Works, Young Goodman Brown a

Nathaniel Hawthorne Critiques Puritan Society in His Works, Young Goodman Brown and The Scarlet Letter Many American writers have scrutinized religion through their works of literature, however none had the enthusiasm of Nathaniel Hawthorne. A handful of Hawthorne's works are clear critiques of seventeenth century Puritan society in New England. Hawthorne's Young Goodman Brown and The Scarlet Letter illustrate his assessment by showing internal battles within characters, hypocrisy in religious figures, atypical punishment for crimes, and accenting women's roles in Puritan society. Firstly, Hawthorne's literature often stresses internal battles in main characters. In both Young Goodman Brown and The Scarlet Letter, these battles are between morals and sin (both past and future). In Young Goodman Brown, Brown goes into the woods and meets Satan. Satan, in the form of Brown's deceased grandfather, asks the weary Brown to take his staff. The staff "bore the likeness of a great black snake... almost be seen to twist and wriggle... like a living serpent" (Hawthorne 1237). The comparison of the strangers' staff as a snake is very reminiscent of the Bible's story of Eve and the serpent in the Garden of Eden. "Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God made" (Genesis 3:1) and as we know Eve ate the fruit from the forbidden tree and succumbed to the serpent's temptation. However, unlike Eve, Brown did not take the serpent-like staff because he knew he was being tested. Differences among Korea, India, and China

Korea, China and India are the countries that have historical backgrounds that make each of them renowned all over the world. These countries have unique attributes that make them stand out to the whole world.  Korea is a divided country of eastern Asia. It occupies a peninsula, about 450 miles in length, between the Sea of Japan and the Yellow Sea. China and a tip of the Soviet Union border Korea on the north. The nearest Japanese islands are about 30 miles away, in the Korea Strait. Since 1945, Korea has been divided into two political units—the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) and the Republic of Korea (South Korea). They are separated by a demilitarized zone, about 2  ½ miles in width, along the armistice line established in 1953 at the close of the Korea War. The total area (including the demilitarized zone) is 85,049 square miles. North Korea occupies 46,540 square miles and South Korea 38,025 square miles. Virtually all the inhabitants of the peninsula are Koreans. They are a Mongoloid people, who apparently migrated in prehistoric times from what is now Manchuria. The Korean language is believed to be unrelated to any known tongue. There is, however, a strong infusion of Chinese words in the vocabulary. A phonetic alphabet—originally 28, now 24 letters—has been in use since 1443. In South Korea offer a free education and compulsory through six years of primary school, which begins at age six. It is followed by three years of middle school and then three years of high school (Choi, 2003). The chief institution of higher learning is Seoul National University. In North Korea, education is free and compulsory through five years of primary school (which begins at age six), four years of middle school, and two years of high school. The major institution of higher learning is Kim II Sung University at Pyongyang. Technical education and the teaching of Communist ideology are stressed in North Korean education. On the other hand, India or Republic of India is a country in southern Asia and a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations. India is an English word derived from the Sanskrit sindhu, which means river and was originally applied to the part of the Indus River now in Pakistan. In Hindi, the official national language established by the Indian constitution, the nation is called Bharat. India has more than 800 languages and dialects. The constitution declares Hindi the national language, but English is also an official language in government and is widely used. The constitution establishes for use in government 14 other major languages. In addition, education is primarily the responsibility of the state governments. The union, or central, government coordinates facilities and standards in the states, administer education in the union territories, and controls four universities and certain special schools (Brown, 2005). While China or the People’s Republic of China is a country in eastern in eastern Asia. It is sometimes called Communist China or Mainland China to distinguish it from the Republic of China to distinguish it from the Republic of China, or Nationalist China, situated on the offshore island of Taiwan (Formosa). Both governments claim to be the rightful rulers of all China, but the Communists have been in firm control of the mainland since 1949 and since 1971 have been recognized by the United Nations as the legal rulers. Chinese, a Sino-Tibetan language, is spoken by most of the people in China. There are a large number of dialects, the chief being Cantonese, Fukienese, and Wu. The official language is the Mandarin dialect, officially called putonghua (common speech), which is understood by about 70 percent of people. Other languages include Tibetan, spoken in Tibet and parts of China Proper; Turkic, in Sinkiang; Mongol, in Inner Mongolia; and Thai, in parts of southern China (Barnett, 2006). Short Essay On Communism †Government Paper

Short Essay On Communism – Government Paper Free Online Research Papers Short Essay On Communism Government Paper Communism, an extreme socialist idea is defined as â€Å"A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people.†-www.dictionary.com During the Industrial Revolution, times for the factory workers were harsh and long. They worked 12 hour or more shifts and got paid a few dollars a week, though the worth of the money was worth much more during the 18th to 19th century. Because factory workers were paid little, they often went on strikes or refused to work. Communism would appeal to them because it’s an idea where everyone shares everything. For example in the factory, the factory would belong to the people and run by the people, not one man or the owner also known as an entrepreneur. Lives in the mills were ruthless compared to the rural life that many farmers had before the Industrial Revolution. The mill owners were savage and forced labor upon small children and their parents sometimes for 12-13 hours at a time in order to maintain high earnings. In a communist government everyone would have to work the same times and but no wages would be given or if they were given; they would be exactly the same. Most likely the hours would be less because their would be no more profits for one particular person over someone else. Biography of Margaret of Anjou, Henry VIs Queen

Biography of Margaret of Anjou, Henry VI's Queen Margaret of Anjou (March 23, 1429–August 25, 1482) was the queen consort of Henry VI of England and a leader of the Lancastrian side in the  Wars of the Roses  (1455–1485), a series of battles for the English throne between the houses of York and Lancaster, both of which descended from Edward III.  Her marriage to the ineffectual, mentally unbalanced Henry VI was arranged as part of a truce in another conflict, the  Hundred Years’ War between  France  and England.  Margaret appears many times in William Shakespeares history plays. Fast Facts: Margaret of Anjou Known For: Henry VIs queen and a fierce partisanAlso Known As: Queen MargaretBorn: March 23, 1429, probably in PontMousson,  FranceParents: Renà © I, Count  of  Anjou; Isabella, duchess of LorraineDied: Aug. 25, 1482 in Anjou province, FranceSpouse: Henry VIChild: Edward Early Life Margaret of Anjou was born on March 23, 1429, probably in PontMousson,  France, in the Lorraine region. She was raised in the chaos of a family feud between her father and her fathers uncle in which her father, Renà © I, Count  of  Anjou and King of Naples and Sicily, was imprisoned for some years. Her mother Isabella, duchess of Lorraine in her own right, was well educated for her time. Because Margaret spent much of her childhood in the company of her mother and her fathers mother, Yolande of Aragon, Margaret was well educated as well. Marriage to Henry VI On April 23, 1445, Margaret married Henry VI of England. Her marriage to Henry was arranged by William de la Pole, later duke of Suffolk, part of the Lancastrian party in the Wars of the Roses. The marriage defeated plans by the House of York, the opposing side, to find a bride for Henry. The wars were named many years afterward from the symbols of the contending parties: the white rose of York and the red of Lancaster. The king of France negotiated Margarets marriage as part of the Truce of Tours, which gave control of Anjou back to France and provided for peace between England and France, temporarily suspending the fighting known later as the Hundred Years War. Margaret was crowned at Westminster Abbey. Henry had inherited his crown when he was an infant, becoming king of England and claiming kingship of France. The French dauphin Charles was crowned as Charles VII with the aid of Joan of Arc in 1429, and Henry had lost most of France by 1453. During Henrys youth, he had been educated and raised by Lancastrians while the duke of York, Henrys uncle, held the power as protector. Margaret played a significant role in her husbands reign, responsible for raising taxes and for match-making among the aristocracy. In 1448, she founded Queens College, Cambridge. Birth of an Heir In 1453, Henry was taken ill with what has usually been described as a bout of insanity; Richard, duke of York, again became protector. But Margaret of Anjou gave birth to a son, Edward, on Oct. 13, 1451, and the duke of York was no longer heir to the throne. Rumors later surfaced- useful to the Yorkists- that Henry was unable to father a child and that Margarets son must be illegitimate. Wars of the Roses Begin After Henry recovered in 1454, Margaret became involved in Lancastrian politics, defending her sons claim as the rightful heir. Between different claims to succession and the scandal of Margarets active role in leadership, the Wars of the Roses began at the battle of St. Albans in 1455. Margaret took an active role in the struggle. She outlawed the Yorkist leaders in 1459, refusing recognition of York as Henrys heir. In 1460, York was killed. His son Edward, then duke of York and later Edward IV, allied with Richard Neville, earl of Warwick, as leaders of the Yorkist party. In 1461, the Lancastrians were defeated at Towton. Edward, son of the late duke of York, became king. Margaret, Henry, and their son went to Scotland; Margaret then went to France and helped arrange French support for an invasion of England, but the forces failed in 1463. Henry was captured and imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1465. Warwick, called Kingmaker, helped Edward IV in his initial victory over Henry VI. After a falling out with Edward, Warwick changed sides and supported Margaret in her cause to restore Henry VI to the throne, which they succeeded in doing in 1470. Warwicks daughter Isabella Neville was married to George, duke of Clarence, son of the late Richard, duke of York. Clarence was the brother of Edward IV and also brother of the next king, Richard III. In 1470, Warwick married (or perhaps formally betrothed) his second daughter Anne Neville to Edward, prince of Wales, son of Margaret and Henry  VI, so both Warwicks bases were covered. Defeat and Death Margaret returned to England on April 14, 1471, and on the same day, Warwick was killed at Barnet. In May 1471, Margaret and her supporters were defeated at the battle of Tewkesbury, where Margaret was taken prisoner and her son Edward was killed. Soon afterward her husband, Henry VI, died in the Tower of London, presumably murdered. Margaret was imprisoned in England for five years. In 1476, the king of France paid a ransom to England for her, and she returned to France, where she lived in poverty until her death on Aug. 25, 1482, in Anjou. Legacy As Margaret and later Queen Margaret, Margaret of Anjou has played major roles in various fictional accounts of the tumultuous era. She is a character in four of William Shakespeares plays, all three Henry VI plays and Richard III. Shakespeare compressed and changed events, either because his sources were incorrect or for the sake of the literary plot, so Margarets representations in Shakespeare are more iconic than historical. The queen, a fierce fighter for her son, her husband, and the House of Lancaster, was described as such in Shakespeares The Third Part of King Henry VI: She-wolf of France, but worse than wolves of France, Whose tongue more poisons than the adders tooth Always strong-willed and ambitious, Margaret was relentless in her efforts to secure the crown for her son, but she ultimately failed. Her fierce partisanship embittered her enemies, and the Yorkists didnt hesitate to allege that her son was a bastard. Sources Margaret of Anjou. Encyclopedia.com.Margaret of Anjou: Queen of England. American culture race and representation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3500 words

American culture race and representation - Essay Example However, the country is also commonly referred to as a ‘melting pot’ because of its habit of mixing people together who are of all nationalities and races. This concept is usually thought of when one is thinking of people from other nations who have come to America voluntarily, seeking a better lifestyle for themselves and their children. This mixing of people and cultures has not always been as easy or as smooth as it sounds, though. The blending of cultures implied in the phrase melting pot has often not been complete as immigrants of a given nation tended to settle in communities of their own kind and the best properties always seemed to go to the whites. It many instances, the mixing has involved a great deal of violence as these various communities battled for their rights to live the way they saw fit. Mixing has also often not been voluntary on either side. An investigation into the history of African Americans on this continent reveals some of heat that has occasi onally caused America’s ‘melting pot’ to boil and ultimately bring about a more even blending. In the initial phase of slavery in the New World (1519-1580), colonies were being formed on both the North and South American continents and the trade of slaves was somewhat limited. From 1580 to 1650, the slave trade from Africa soared because of massive Native American deaths due to disease, the growth of the economy in the colonies and the unification of the Portuguese and Spanish governments (Palmer, 1976). The early era of colonization in the New World was a time of enormous changes as â€Å"the native Indian populations were decimated by disease and increasingly dominated by the Spanish social and economic structure† (Meyer, 2003). However, slavery declined steadily during the years between 1650 and 1827. â€Å"From New England to Virginia to Jamaica, the English planters in seventeenth-century America developed the habit of

At the beginning of President Obama’s regime, he made an announcement that he was going to nominate Kagan to the position of the solicitor general despite the fact that she had no prior records of having argued any case before the court. In the year 2009, the senate confirmed her nomination making her the first woman to hold that position in the history of the United States. In September the same year she made her first ever appearance before the Supreme Court. However, contentions arose in regard to the arguments she advanced i n her capacity as the solicitor general. Cato institute and the first amendment centre disputed her arguments. Her nomination to the Supreme Court was a subject of great interest even before the election of President Obama to office. The media was rife with speculation of her potential nomination if a democrat president carried the day in the elections. This was because of her position as the Solicitor general which was seen to serve as a great leverage (Toobin, 2008). However, this was not to be as Obama had nominated Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Following the announcement of Justice Paul Stevens on his intentions to retire, speculations emerged once again on the possibility of Kagan nomination to the Supreme Court. Kagan’s
