The Peoples Republic of China vs. the Internet Essay

The introduction of the Internet to the mainstream world has brought with it a new way of distributing information. This new distribution of information over the Internet has created a power struggle between some states and their citizens. The basic definition of power is the action of a person over another person to force the submissive person to do something he would not ordinarily do. Brian A. Connery, a professor at Oakland University who has studied power, defines power as, Any capacity to get people to do what you want them to do. Power is evident in the relationship between a state and its citizens. The government has power over its citizens to enact laws and regulate society. In many societies, such as the†¦show more content†¦As a result of this surge of information, the government has started to punish and imprison dissidents who use the Internet to spread their ideas. That is why, the rise of information in China has created a power struggle between th e state and its citizens and has unmasked Chinas illegitimate government. Power can come in different forms and these classifications can make this relationship clearer so one can comprehend the power struggle between the political elite and their citizens. If we can comprehend the importance of the different types of power then we can begin to understand the power the Chinese government exerts over its citizens. The authors Keohane and Nye explain the different kinds of power and their uses. The first category is behavioral power. Behavioral power is divided into sub-categories of hard and soft power - hard power being the capability to get people to do what they usually would not through threats or rewards, while soft power is the coercion of people because they desire the same goals as those who hold the power. The second category is resource power, which is classified as power in which an organ controls resources to reach the desired outcomes. (86).
